Gas fireplace surround with hearth and mantle. Approximately 60" x 56". The design was inspired by a decorative arched opening in an adobe wall located in Santa Fe.
Blackbird Clay Studio is the culmination of decades of working with clay. Several years ago I became interested in large-scale ceramics and began to research how architectural terra cotta had been produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are many examples of architectural terra cotta in our cities, but little information is available on materials and techniques. It became clear that resurrecting this art form would require dedicated research and testing. After developing tools and techniques, and formulating clays and a palette of colorants that will withstand all weather conditions, I was able to begin production. The pieces shown here are hand-made and one-of-a-kind. Complex pieces are designed using computer-modeling software. Each piece is built as a unit and then cut into sections that can fit into the kiln. The piece is then fired to 2100 degrees. The final product is a unique and lasting piece of artwork that adds value and beauty to your home or garden.
